The History
The Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals was established in 2014 when Rick Simpson approached Thunder Bay Truck Centre in search of sponsorship to help bring racing back to Thunder Bay in the form of a weekend race event. The Simpson family had arranged the use of Mosquito Speedway, which is in Nolalu, and were spending countless hours working on the track to prepare it for racing. Working together with the Simpsons, the 1st annual Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals was born and took place on September 13 & 14, 2014. The Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals has continued to grow every year, drawing bigger crowds and more racers. The Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals would not have been possible each year without the endless amount of work that the Simpson family put into planning and organizing the event, as well as all the work put into making sure that Mosquito Speedway was ready for racing.
In 2021 the annual event was moved to the newly built DQ Speedway. The 8th annual Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals was held on September 17-19, 2021 in the grand opening event of the new track. Since then, the track has been renamed Thunder City Speedway, and Thunder Bay Truck Centre continues to be a proud sponsor of the track. Under the ownership of Norm and Louis Nadin, the track has become a first-class facility, winning Wissota Track of The Year in 2022. Our annual Thunder Bay Truck Centre Dirt Track Nationals is now held at Thunder City Speedway every September.
